CONNECTING OUR EYES, BRAIN, AND ARMS CAN MAKE ALL THE DIFFERENCE
Why Depth Perception Matters In Golf
Your ability to judge distances can make or break a round of golf
The perfect swing wasn’t enough …
I was on the green, lining up my putt.
I took a few practice swings and then stepped up to the ball. I focused on the cup and slowly guided the ball toward it.
As I watched it roll closer and closer, I started to get excited. I could almost taste the victory.
And then, something happened. The ball suddenly stopped moving and just sat there, mocking me. I gave it a look, but it still wouldn’t budge.
What had gone wrong?
Depth perception is a critical ingredient for success
I realized that my depth perception must have been off. I was aiming too far to the right and the ball ended up going nowhere near the cup.
Depth perception is an essential skill for golfers.
It’s what allows us to judge how far away an object is and determine how much power we need to hit the ball.
Also, depth perception allows you to accurately measure yardage and assess the conditions on the green when putting.
If our depth perception is off, it can lead to disastrous results on the golf course. There are several reasons why your depth perception might be off.
Abnormal eye alignment (either a wandering eye or a crossed eye) can negatively affect your ability to judge depth.
Also, differences in vision between the two eyes can reduce your depth perception ability.
Fortunately, each of these can be addressed thru a thorough sports vision exam and the necessary fixes can be put in place.
Additionally, it is possible to train your eyes and brain for better depth perception through computer-based apps.
You need to be able to trust your judgment and your vision when you’re out on the course. Otherwise, you might find yourself missing those, and other, crucial shots.
