It may not seem like it, but basketball is a very visual game.

What your eyes tell you and how you use that information is critical to your basketball success.

From shooting free throws to making an amazing behind-the-back pass, vision is critical to basketball success.

The reason why your eyes are crucial

Have you ever tried to shoot a basket with your eyes closed?

Sure you may hit the backboard with your shot, but without vision, you have a very small chance to make the shot.

There are certainly many factors critical to basketball performance — below, we’ll focus on a critical ability that can be both tested and trained for maximal on-court performance.

Having great vision is not enough!

In order to succeed in basketball, it is critical to use your eyes properly. Enter the concept of the Quiet Eye.

The Quiet Eye describes the period just before, during, and just after you shoot.

What you look at and where your eyes are directed can make all the difference.

Basically, keeping your eyes aimed at a specific point on the rim, and avoiding looking at other points during this period can make all the difference between success and failure.

Plus, this approach has been scientifically proven, in many published studies, to improve shooting success.

The Science behind the Quiet Eye

In one of these scientific reports involving NBA players we found that those players who made 30/30 free throws had a much better quiet eye than those players who only made 15 out of 30 free throws.

Fortunately, there are many techniques on how to test, train and practice the quiet eye.

Take a look at these two heat maps of what NBA players were looking at when they were taking free throws:

The left image is from a player who made 50% of his free throws, and the right image is from a player who made 100% of his free throws

Do you see how much tighter the player on the right looked at the rim as compared to the left?

Leveraging this technique can have a very positive effect on your game!

The Quiet Eye is not unique and there are many other visual skills that can have an amazing effect on your basketball performance.

Maximizing all visual abilities can have a dramatic effect on your basketball performance.
