CONNECTING OUR EYES, BRAIN, AND ARMS CAN MAKE ALL THE DIFFERENCE
A Simple Tennis Drill To Improve Your Hand-Eye Coordination
Training your eyes and your hands could make you a champion
Hand-Eye coordination is critical for tennis
When it comes to tennis, hand-eye coordination is key.
By optimizing the connection between your hands and eyes, you can improve your tennis performance.
Hand-eye coordination is critical for optimal tennis performance. The connection between the hands and eyes allows players to track the ball and react most efficiently.
When this connection is not optimized, it can lead to subpar performance on the court.
This training drill could make you a star
The following drill is very good at increasing your hand-eye coordination, your racket-face awareness as well as your touch and feel skills.
For this drill, toss the tennis ball straight up with your left hand directly in front as you swing your vertically oriented racquet, in a downward curving motion to the left, matching the ball as it falls, to gently cradle and catch the tennis ball with your strings, finally with an upward-facing racquet.
Once you master the forehand motion, you can graduate to the more difficult similar task. In this case, use a backhand motion to slowly cradle and catch the falling ball onto your racquet strings.
Additionally, repeat the above actions but this time alternate between the forehand catch and the backhand catch.
Finally, and for a real challenge, move to an area where you can throw the ball up 6–10 feet and then practice catching it with the racquet face — this makes the task much harder as the ball is moving faster as it falls making a successful catch much more difficult.
The benefits of hand-eye coordination
Good hand-eye coordination allows you to track the ball more effectively, react quicker, and hit the ball with more accuracy. All of these factors contribute to a better tennis game.
Improving hand-eye coordination can be the difference between winning and losing on the tennis court. By optimizing this important connection, players can improve their overall performance and increase their chances of success.
